You and I both know creating for a living isn’t as easy as gazing at the sunset and effortlessly spitting your magic into the world.

Some days, it’s heavy lifting. Inspiration is MIA. The blank page screams so loudly you can barely hear your thoughts, let alone your voice. It feels like you’re carrying every doubt, rejection, and unanswered question at once.

I am always almost giving up. It happened just a few days ago when, for the life of me, I couldn’t get the flower prints to work. It’s part of the messy loop.

I’ve stared at a blank canvas waiting for a sign that never came. I’ve whispered in shame, “Is this even worth it?”

But somewhere, in the quiet, a stubborn little whisper always rose:

“Try again, silly mushy cauliflower. Just one more step.”

So I did. One messiness at a time, even when I swore I had nothing left in me.

And somehow, those tiny acts of defiance led me back to my purpose.

Doubt doesn’t knock politely. It slams the door, dumps its bags, and makes itself at home, muddy shoes on the table. It tells you your dreams are too small, your work isn’t good enough, and worst of all, that maybe no one cares.

It’s easy to wonder if creating is even right for you.

But here’s the truth: the pauses and doubts aren’t the end. It’s space to tune in.

It helps you refine what you really want to make. It clears out the nonsense cluttering your mind.

Imagine if Ellie from The Last of Us gave up in that doomed world? (I’ve been catching up with the show) No chance of survival. No story. Just fungus having a happy ending. 

But she didn’t quit. She trudged through broken cities with nothing but grit, grief, a backpack of ghosts, and a journal. No permission. No perfect conditions. Just relentless forward motion.

If she didn’t quit, neither should you.

It all counts.

Every rough draft.

Every abandoned project.

Every almost-but-not-quite attempt.

That’s imperfect growth.

Even when it feels like nothing is moving, you are moving.

You’re showing up.

You’re making something out of nothing.

Art doesn’t need to be perfect to be worthy. Some of the most important things you’ll ever make won’t be for an audience. They’ll be for healing, for processing, for finding your way back to yourself.

This is what becoming looks like.

Your voice is shaping itself.

Your work is refining itself.

Your purpose is revealing itself.

And you? You’re proving you are stronger than the doubt.

So, remember why you started. 

Go back to that first spark, the first time you picked up a pencil, a camera, a microphone, a recipe book. Hold onto that.

Then go create. For the joy. For the mess. Because it’s who you are.

Some days it’s just a checkmark on a to-do list. Other days, it’s your heart and soul poured out.

Like Ellie, you are building something worth living. A story only you can tell. One the world needs.
